Ayers Visits after 32 Years
“Mr. Will Ayers, of Texas, Surprises Georgia Relatives,” Lavonia Times and Gauge 3 Jan 1913.

Mr. Will Ayers, of Texas, Surprises Georgia Relatives

Mr. Will Ayers, of Hillsboro, Texas, came to Lavonia during the holidays to spend a few weeks with his relatives and friends. He is a former citizen of Franklin County and is a brother of Mrs. David Sewell, of Lavonia, and of Mrs. J. G. W. Sewell, of Fair View. Mr. Ayers went to Texas thirty-two years ago and this was his first trip back since that time. He is a farmer of Hillsboro and one of the prosperous citizens of that good county.
Mr. Ayers did not advise his relatives here of his coming taking them completely by surprise. He remembers many of our citizens and recalls many incidents of the times many years ago.

Chander Visits after 18 Years
“Mr. E. H. Chandler Visits Lavonia: First Visit in Eighteen Years,” Lavonia Times and Gauge 17 June 1912.

Mr. E. H. Chandler Visits Lavonia
First Visit in Eighteen Years

Mr. E. H. Chandler, of Stephenville, Tex., returned the latter part of last week from a visit of ten days in Lavonia with relatives and friends. Mr. Chandler is a brother of the late A. D. S. Chandler and was reared at Chandler’s Shoals in Hart county. He left Georgia and settled in Texas in 1865 just after the close of the war. This was his first visit to Franklin county since 1894, when he came to this country. His people here had not heard from him in eight or ten years. By a remarkable coincidence he came to Lavonia only a few hours after his brother A. D. S. Chandler had died. He did not know his brother had been ill and had not heard from him in perhaps ten years.
Mr. Chandler is now about seventy-two years of age. He served four years in the Civil War. He is to-day a prominent land owner of his section. He has retired from active business but still retains a large real estate interest. He returned by way of Anderson and Augusta and expected to reach home by the fifth of June. Mr. Chandler remembered many of his old friends in this section and enjoyed rejuvenating old acquaintances.

“After 40 Years Visit Old Home,” Lavonia Times and Gauge 9 Aug 1912.

After 40 Years Visit Old Home.

Mr. Jno. W. Harrison attended a reunion of his brother and sisters at the Cliffs on Tugaloo river on Friday of last week. This is the farm on which Mr. Harrison was reared and the trip over the farm was the first one for him since he left it forty years ago. Mr. Harrison went to the old home place a little over thirty years ago, but did not go over the farm. All of the brothers and sisters were present except one. The day was spent in reminiscences and was very pleasant for every attendant.

VISITS FRANKLIN COUNTY AFTER 32 YEARS

The confederate Veterans Reunion brought many back to their old home sections in Georgia who had been away for a long period of years.  Among those to come was Mr. W. C. Phillipps of Canton, Neb., who was reared in the Poplar Springs Camp Ground section of Franklin county.  Mr. Phillipps left Georgia 32 years ago and has been in Nebraska the greater part of the time since going away.  His present home is at Canton, Neb. where he is extensively engaged in the cattle business.
Among the old friends of Mr. Phillipps who now live in Lavonia are Messrs. D. L. Swilling and Chas. B. Sewell.  Mr. Phillipps talks interestingly of the school he attended at Poplar Springs Camp Ground in 1860.  The school was taught in the preachers tent at the camp ground to which there was a chimney and fire place.  The terms were 10 months long in those days.  His teachers at that place were Dr. Jno. Tucker and Mr. Mike Whitlow both numbered among the educators of the county at that time.  Mr. Philippps remembers that Mrs. H. P. Osborn, C. N. Hays, and Tolbert Phillipps were pupils of the same school 59 years ago.  Mr. Phillipps numbers among his old time friends, Messrs. S. P. Bond, B. H. Burton, Reeder Beatenbough, J. T. Starr, J. A. Duncan, Mrs. T. C. Burton, A. J. Neal, and others.  Mr. Phillipps is an interesting talker and enjoys recounting the scenes and times in and around Canon a half century ago and longer.  He expects to spend the greater part of the winter in this section.

W. M. WATSON VISITS BROTHER, S. C. WATSON.

The recent days have been very fruitful with surprise visits from those who went away in the years gone by, took advantage of the Reunion* to return to their home section.  One of the visitors who happened in with least warning and with the greatest surprise was Mr. W. H. Watson, of Palapenta, Texas.  Mr. Watson is a brother of Mr. S. C. Watson of Lavonia and has been away for 43 years.
Mr. S. C. Watson had not heard from his brother in so long that he thought him dead.  He did not know his brother when he arrived.  There was great rejoicing when the two found out who each other was.
